Swimming

Swimming and water safety is an extremely important part of the PE curriculum at Northwick and another way of helping children to lead healthy and active lives.   Pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 swim once a week for 12 weeks. Year 5 in the Autumn term, Year 4 in the Spring and finally Year 3 in the Summer.  Lessons take place at Droitwich Leisure Centre on a Monday morning.  Pupils are taught according to their ability and are taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Children are also encouraged to swim competitively.  We take part in several galas throughout the year and have been very successful in the Worcestershire Schools Champions competitions.  Sheila King our Swimming teacher also organises an ‘in house’ gala once a year to allow all swimmers to experience an element of competition.  Over the years we have built strong links with Worcester Swimming Club and many of our pupils are performing at an extremely high level.

For those children in Year 6 who aren’t able to swim at least 25 metres, we provide ‘Top Up’ swimming lessons.  This ensures that nearly every pupil leaving Northwick can reach the National requirement.
