AUTUMN TERM 2015-16
SUMMER TERM
This term we study the Great Fire of London. The children's homework was to construct a medieval house to enable them to see the effects of fire spreading. A sunny day and a swirling wind helped create the perfect conditions for their experiment which there was a lot of excitement and chanting burn, burn, burn.
We visited St. Stephens Church to study its features associated with Christian Worship such as the alter and font.
Our materials topic was supported by a trip the Rays Farm where we looked at the sculptures and returned home to create some of our own in the Forest Schools area with a local artist.
Walks around the local area saw us studying what made up a community, a traffic survey, admiring the trees in Gheluvelt Park and using a branching database in Computing to identify the trees a selection of leaves came from.
But we saved the best till last!!! We have followed instructions to cook our own pizzas and taken them home in boxes decorated with our personal logos designed and created in Publisher. We spent time working with fractions as we decide how much pizza we would like to eat: a quarter, a half, three quarters. No don’t be silly a whole one please!!!!!!
SPRING TERM
What an exciting term. We were visited by aliens who left us messages!! We used the computers to type the questions we would like to ask our visitors from outer space and we have created our own felt alien puppets!!
Our Toys topic was great fun examining toys of the past and how the
materials they are made from have changed and also the sort of toys we enjoy playing with today. The grown ups were very kindly lent us a fabulous array of toys which the children labelled to create a toy museum for the day which was open to the public!
In our geography topic we are looking at important buildings and parks in Worcester and exploring parts of the country using the Barnaby Bear software.
Our French Day was super fun, we came dressed in a French style, sampled typical French food and Mrs Briand’s lesson learning some French greetings and simple vocabulary.
We finished the term with an exhibition of our art and DT work inspired by French pointillism, aboriginal art and Scottish shortbread!
AUTUMN TERM
The children have settled well in their new classes and had a busy term with lots of exciting activities.
Our Me and You topic culminated in a Class Bears Birthday Party where we all dressed for the occasion, made crowns and had the opportunity to explore all the senses with touch, smell, taste and a blind fold game.
We have looked at senses poetry, collecting our own word bank of suitable words and created our own portraits in art.
In our science topic Light we have identified various light sources and the movement of the sun. This is linked into understanding Diwali and we have made and decorated our own tea light holders.
We visited a local playground to look at how the equipment was made and the layout, but best of all got to play on it! We have used a graphical modelling package to design our own playgrounds ensuring all age groups had suitable equipment and the adults had somewhere to sit!
We have studied our own school deciding what we like and what we would like to change. We will begin to understand what school life was like in Victorian times and had the opportunity to visit a real Victorian classroom when we visited the Black Country Museum.
We have written a newspaper article recounting our visit to the Black Country Museum.
In Computing we have used PowerPoint to import photos of equipment around the school such as whiteboards, lights, radiators and the Victorian equivalent. We recorded a sentence to create our own class PowerPoint presentation to educate other children with.
