Curriculum

This is reflected in our intent of our curriculum, which is best expressed as a goal – for our children to have extraordinary futures in an ever-changing world – and as a group of inter-related characteristics. Our curriculum has four drivers that by the end of their time here, our children will be able to:

act and think in ways which reflect the need for sustainability; by having the knowledge to answer the question how can we make and promote choices which heal and protect our world?

act and think in ways which reflect the need for collaboration and partnership within and between communities to bring about positive change.

act and think in ways which are rooted in fairness and equality: by promoting choices which show understanding and respect for the rights of everyone.

The achievement of this purpose requires the curriculum to be designed to teach and secure foundational knowledge. This is the knowledge which children will need to think with, to construct and apply deeper understanding, and to act upon. Over time, the children’s experience of the curriculum gives them opportunities to explore and secure this foundational knowledge through repeated exposure and through new experiences and applications. In doing this, children weave together strands of knowledge to strengthen their understanding of what they know and why it is important. The overall tapestry of the curriculum weaves together the knowledge built, strengthening it, and giving it its distinctive purpose.
The curriculum is also designed to motivate children to take pride in their achievements and to appreciate and value the achievements of others. A key element of this motivation is making connections between their experiences and knowledge and seeing the value and purpose of these connections. In this way they are becoming “the change they want to see in the world.”
The subject disciplines of the curriculum each have their defined body of foundational knowledge which are the building blocks of the knowledge needed to achieve the aims of the subject. The design structure of each subject discipline supports teaching which builds knowledge through application. Units of study have been selected and sequenced so that each block secures prior experiences and learning, and then applies this prior knowledge in new contexts. These ‘bricks’ in each subject are held together within the discipline by the ‘mortar’ – the mix of the big ideas of the subject, the disciplinary and substantive concepts which recur throughout the different units of study. This mix is strengthened by designing strong connections to the purpose of each unit of study, expressed as an overarching enquiry question. Children see that they are building knowledge and experiences which, over the whole of the unit, allow them to answer these questions.
As the structure of their subject knowledge and the weave of the different bodies of knowledge both become stronger, they develop and deepen the knowledge, understanding and characteristics which equip them to act and think in ways which embody our children going on to have extraordinary futures in an ever-changing world.
