Art
Our Art Curriculum Intent
Our art curriculum aims to inspire children to explore, develop, and apply their artistic knowledge and skills. Through experimentation, invention, and creative expression, pupils learn to produce original works of art and to think critically about the work of others. Central to this journey are eight key concepts—line, colour, texture, form, shape, space, pattern, and tone—which underpin all artistic practice. By engaging with these elements, children gain a deeper understanding of how art communicates ideas and emotions, and they learn to use these principles to refine and enhance their own creations.
The Role of Sketchbooks
Sketchbooks are an essential tool in developing artistic thinking and creativity. They allow children to:
- Record and collect ideas for future projects
- Observe and document details from the world around them
- Express opinions and preferences about art and design
- Adapt and improve ideas through reflection and refinement
- Experiment with techniques to explore different effects and styles
Through regular sketchbook use, pupils build confidence in their creative process, develop resilience in problem-solving, and strengthen their ability to communicate visually.
