Design and Technology
At Northwick Manor Primary School, we want our pupils to become imaginative thinkers, problem-solvers and future innovators. Design and Technology provides a unique space where children combine scientific, mathematical, computing and artistic skills to create products that are purposeful, functional and meaningful. In line with the Rivers Academy Trust vision of Extraordinary Education, Extraordinary People, Extraordinary Futures, we encourage pupils to see themselves as capable designers who can influence and improve the world around them.
Our curriculum is shaped by the Trust values of SHARING, TRUST, ACHIEVEMENT, RESPECT and SAFETY:
- SHARING: Collaboration is at the heart of D&T. Children share ideas, feedback and solutions, learning that creativity improves when we work together.
“A brilliant design will always benefit from the input of others.” – Dame Zaha Hadid - TRUST: Pupils learn to trust their ideas and the design process, understanding that great designers often begin by exploring, questioning and adapting.
“I have not failed. I’ve found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison - ACHIEVEMENT: By studying designers from diverse backgrounds, pupils see that extraordinary achievements grow from curiosity and determination.
“Failure is the opportunity to begin again, only more intelligently.” – Henry Ford - RESPECT: Pupils design with empathy, considering the needs, cultures and experiences of others. They develop respect for different perspectives through exploring global products, foods and innovations.
- SAFETY: Children develop confidence using tools and materials safely, understanding that careful, responsible practice enables creativity to flourish.
We introduce pupils to inspiring designers, innovators and young inventors to show that great ideas can come from anyone. Richard Turere reminds us of the power of curiosity:
“One day I took apart my mum's new radio – she almost killed me but I learnt a lot about electronics.”
Our D&T curriculum also strengthens British Values, particularly mutual respect, individual liberty and valuing different cultures and viewpoints. Through designing, making and evaluating, pupils build the skills, confidence and mindset needed for an extraordinary future—one where they can imagine, create and innovate.
